Jim Skippen is Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of Quarterhill and President of WiLAN. Since June 2006, he has been responsible for all operations of WiLAN, including the development and implementation of the company’s strategic and operating plans.

Under Jim’s leadership, WiLAN has assembled a world-class technology licensing team, grown its portfolio from approximately 20 patents to over 4,000 patents, established a stronger balance sheet and increased its market capitalization from $25 million to over $400 million. In his career, he has been responsible for license agreements in excess of $1.5 billion. To date, over 290 companies including technology leaders BlackBerry, Broadcom, Fujitsu, Intel, LG, Motorola Mobility, Nokia, Panasonic and Samsung have licensed technologies in WiLAN’s patent portfolio.

A seasoned licensing executive and lawyer, Jim has managed several large and complex patent licensing negotiations and litigations. Before joining WiLAN, he worked for two of Canada’s largest law firms and held a number of senior management positions, including Senior Vice-President, Patent Licensing and General Counsel at MOSAID Technologies.

Jim is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada. He is a former Vice-Chairman and board member of the Canadian Diabetes Association. Jim is a frequent speaker at conferences and has delivered numerous papers and articles on topics such as management of intellectual property, patent licensing and technology law.

Shaun has more than 20 years of experience in finance and executive leadership positions in public and private high-technology companies.

Before joining Quarterhill, he held the position of Chief Financial Officer at WiLAN where he was responsible for all financial and fiscal management aspects of WiLAN’s operations including business planning, accounting, budgeting and financial reporting efforts.

Before joining WiLAN, he held the position of Chief Financial Officer at BreconRidge Manufacturing Solutions where he was responsible for overall financial management. His accomplishments while at BreconRidge included leading private placement transactions that raised more than $40 million and completing numerous corporate acquisitions.

Prior to BreconRidge, Shaun served in increasingly senior positions at Calian Technologies Ltd., first as Chief Financial Officer and then President and Chief Executive Officer. During his tenure at the publicly traded company, Shaun was responsible for all its financial affairs, completed several corporate acquisitions and divestitures, helped grow revenues to more than $125 million and served as corporate secretary and as a Director.

Shaun also held senior executive positions at Microstar Software and led the company’s initial public offering on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 1993.

Shaun holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Carleton University and is a Chartered Professional Accountant.

Prashant Watchmaker oversees all of Quarterhill’s corporate, M&A and securities legal requirements, and acts as corporate secretary for the company.

Prashant practiced corporate, securities and technology law and tax litigation with the Ottawa law firm of LaBarge Weinstein Professional Corporation for 10 years, developing extensive experience and negotiating many significant transactions for clients in Canada, the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Prashant has also practiced banking law as Legal Counsel with the Canadian Payments Association.

Prashant holds a LLB and a BA from the University of Ottawa and a MA from the University of Toronto. He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada.

John Varghese is responsible for leading the acquisitions team at Quarterhill. John is a senior professional with extensive experience having served on over 20 boards of public and private companies, industry associations and not for profit organizations. John’s experience ranges from private equity, venture capital and investment banking to senior management and board of director roles in various industries. His career has included senior management roles within multi-national corporations including CI Financial Corp., Royal Bank Capital Corporation, Midland Walwyn Capital Inc. (Merrill Lynch Canada), Dell Computer Corporation, Jim Pattison Industries Ltd and KPMG Peat Marwick. John is a CA, CPA and is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Paul McCarten has more than 40 years of legal and management experience. Most recently, he was a partner in the business law group of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, a leading national Canadian law firm. Paul is currently on the Board of Start2Finish, a not for profit organization which operates in at risk communities across Canada. The mission of Start2Finish is to break the cycle of child poverty in Canada.

He previously served as National Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada and as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Diabetes Association. Paul is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and the former Chair of the Ontario Bar Association real estate section.

With over 20 years of executive-level financial and operational experience, John Gillberry is a seasoned negotiator on major capital and M&A transactions, garnering a stellar track record with leading venture capital firms, institutional investors and other financial stakeholders.

John currently serves on the board of two public companies. He has held several executive level positions with firms in financial, health care, software and consumer electronics. John holds a MBA from the Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario.

Rick Shorkey is a chartered accountant with more than 30 years of industry experience in senior financial and general management roles. He has provided part-time and interim CFO services to several technology companies since September 2002.

Prior to this he was CFO of ATMOS Corporation, which specializes in semiconductor embedded memory IP. Rick’s experience also includes time as Chief Financial Officer of Bytec-Comterm Inc., a manufacturer of IBM-compatible computer products; and President of Solartronics Ltd., one of the top 10 manufacturers of solar equipment in Canada. He has also held senior financial positions with Bowmar Canada Ltd. and Leigh Instruments Ltd.

He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Roxanne Anderson is the CEO of March Advisory Inc. which specializes in transformation and turnaround mandates. She has over 25 years of corporate transformation and turnaround experience, including strategic reviews, financial and operational transformation, turnarounds, risk management and governance across a number of industries but with an emphasis on technology.

Roxanne was with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP for 27 years where she held various roles including Managing Partner of the National Federal Government Services Practice and Managing Partner of the Ottawa office. She is Chair of the Board of Directors of the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research and is an Advisory Board Member of TruReach Health Inc., a mental wellness company.

Roxanne holds BComm and MBA degrees from McMaster University, and is a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Professional Accountant and a Chartered Director of the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Dr. Michel Fattouche co-founded WiLAN with Dr. Hatim Zaghloul in 1992. Michel also co-founded Cell-Loc, a company focused on licensing and selling wireless location technology and services. An industry authority in digital wireless communication technology, Michel is a tenured professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Calgary where he has taught and conducted research since 1986. He also holds multiple patents in the U.S. and Canada.

Michel has spoken at several industry events and is a member of Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta. In 2002, he was named Ernst & Young’s Prairie Entrepreneur of the Year in the communications and technology category. He is also on the Board of Directors of PsiNaptic. Michel holds an MSc and PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto.

Ron Laurie is the co-founder and Managing Director of Inflexion Point Strategy, LLC, the first intellectual property investment bank, which provides patent brokerage and IP-driven M&A advisory services to technology companies and institutional investors.

Before Inflexion Point, Ron was a founding partner of the Silicon Valley offices of the Skadden Arps, Weil Gotshal and Irell & Manella law firms, where he founded and led the firm’s IP Strategy & Transactions practice group and led IP teams in some of the largest high-tech and life sciences M&A and joint venture deals ever done, worth over $50 billion in the aggregate.

Ron holds a JD degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law, a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Berkeley and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Ian McKinnon is an independent business consultant. Between 1995 and 2007, Ian was President, Chief Executive Officer and a member of the boards of directors of Promis Systems Corporation Ltd. and Certicom Corp.

He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of TSX listed Constellation Software Inc. and Chair of the Board of Directors of Prinova Corp., a privately held Canadian software company. Ian was a member of the Board of Directors of SMART Technologies Inc., a Canadian TSX and Nasdaq listed technology company that was acquired by Foxconn Singapore (Pte) Ltd. in 2016.

Ian holds an Honours BA from McMaster University and attended the INSEAD Advanced Management Program.
